NATURAL LEADERSHIP METHOD™
Change the habits. Change the behaviour.
Natural Leadership Method™ is a practical approach to creating calmer, more reliable dog behaviour by changing the everyday habits that shape it.
Instead of making training another task on your schedule, the method works through the routines, decisions and interactions already happening in your daily life.
THE FOUNDATION
Habits shape behaviour.
Dogs are learning from us all day—not only when we decide it’s time to train.
How we open a door, begin a walk, respond to excitement, give affection, manage greetings, create freedom and handle everyday decisions all contribute to the habits our dogs develop.
We change our habits to change the dog’s habits.
When our behaviour becomes clearer and more consistent, it becomes easier for the dog to understand what is expected. Over time, those repeated everyday experiences help calm, reliable behaviour become habitual too.
THE METHOD IN PRACTICE
Principles that turn the philosophy into everyday action.
Natural Leadership Method™ is built around a set of practical principles that guide how we live with, communicate with and make decisions for our dogs.
They work together—not as isolated training exercises, but as a consistent way of shaping everyday behaviour.
01 — THE COACH–PLAYER PRINCIPLE
The person makes the decisions. The dog learns to follow the guidance.
Think of the relationship like a good coach and player. The coach provides direction, sets expectations and creates situations where the player can succeed. Leadership means calm responsibility, guidance and protection—not force, intimidation or dominance.
02 — STRUCTURE BEFORE FREEDOM
Freedom grows as reliable habits develop.
Rather than giving a dog responsibility before they are ready for it, we create clear structure and make success achievable. As calm, reliable behaviour becomes habitual, more freedom can be introduced.
03 — WE WORK, DOGS REST
Your dog doesn’t need to be involved in everything you do.
Dogs can learn that while we move through our day, they can simply relax. They don’t need to follow, supervise or respond to every activity around them. Calm rest helps remove the sense that they are responsible for what is happening.
04 — AFFECTION-BASED LEARNING
Affection has value when it is given intentionally.
Affection is more than something we give because we love our dogs. Within Natural Leadership Method™, it can reinforce the calm behaviour and choices we want to see more often. Timing matters: we use affection intentionally rather than automatically rewarding excitement or attention-seeking.
05 — HANDLER DECISIONS & ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL
You make the decisions so your dog doesn’t have to.
The handler decides how situations are approached and manages the environment to make success clear and achievable. When dogs don’t feel responsible for controlling what happens around them, they have more opportunity to relax and follow our guidance.
06 — NAME RESERVED FOR RECALL
Your dog’s name should mean something important.
Within Natural Leadership Method™, the dog’s name is reserved primarily for recall rather than being repeated throughout the day to get attention. This helps preserve its value when we genuinely need the dog to orient to us and return.
07 — CALM OBSERVATION & NON-GREETING PRACTICE
Your dog doesn’t need to interact with everything they encounter.
Dogs can learn to calmly observe people, dogs and activity without automatically approaching or greeting them. Practising calm observation helps reduce the expectation that every encounter requires a response and makes everyday situations easier to manage.
08 — SUCCESS BEFORE DIFFICULTY
Make success clear and achievable, then build from there.
We don’t ask a dog for more than they are ready to handle. We begin with situations where success is realistic, establish the behaviour we want, and gradually increase the challenge as better habits become more reliable.
THE METHOD IN EVERYDAY LIFE
The work happens in the moments you already share with your dog.
Natural Leadership Method™ doesn’t depend on setting aside long periods for formal training. The opportunities are already there—in the way you begin the day, move through the house, go for a walk, answer the door, greet people and settle down at the end of the day.
These ordinary moments are where habits are repeated. When they are handled with greater clarity, consistency and intention, everyday life itself becomes the place where better behaviour develops.

AT THE DOOR
Calm begins before the door opens.

ON THE WALK
The person sets the direction and pace.

AROUND PEOPLE & DOGS
Observation doesn’t have to become interaction.

AT HOME
While we eat, dogs learn to rest.
A DIFFERENT WAY OF THINKING ABOUT BEHAVIOUR
Training teaches skills. Everyday habits shape behaviour.
A dog may know how to sit, stay or come and still pull on the leash, rush the door, become overexcited around visitors or struggle to settle at home. Knowing a skill and living with reliable behaviour are not the same thing.
Natural Leadership Method™ looks beyond whether the dog knows a command. We look at the routines, expectations and responses surrounding the behaviour—and at what is being repeated often enough to become a habit.
The goal isn’t a dog that performs well during practice. It’s a dog that knows how to live calmly and reliably in everyday life.
DEVELOPED BY ZORAN LAZIC
A method shaped by decades of working with dogs and the people who live with them.
Natural Leadership Method™ grew from years of hands-on work with dogs and their owners, and from seeing the same pattern repeatedly: teaching a dog more commands doesn’t necessarily change what happens in everyday life.
Over time, the focus became clearer. Lasting change often begins with the person—how we structure daily life, make decisions, respond to behaviour, use affection and create expectations the dog can understand.

Natural Leadership Method™ brings together the principles, habits and everyday decisions that shape behaviour in everyday life.
